Kilometers of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems under protection or sustainable management (km2)
Definition and Methodology
Total area, in square kilometers (km2), of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems that are legally or effectively protected or under sustainable management with Grants' support.
Terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems include forests, wetlands, rivers, grasslands, and other natural habitats.
"Under protection" means that the areas have been designated or managed to prevent degradation, conserve biodiversity, and maintain ecological functions (e.g., national parks, reserves, or conservation easements). Protection efforts can include conservation programmes, policy enforcement, and habitat restoration initiatives (non-exhaustive list).
"Under sustainable management" means that the ecosystems are managed using practices that balance conservation with responsible resource use, such as marine spatial planning, sustainable fisheries, and habitat restoration.
Management efforts can include terrestrial and freshwater conservation programmes, policy implementation, and ecosystem-based management initiatives (non-exhaustive list).
