Kilometers of marine areas under protection or sustainable management (km2)
Definition and Methodology
Total area, in square kilometers (km2), of marine ecosystems that are legally or effectively protected or under sustainable management with Grants' support.
Marine areas include oceans, coastal zones, coral reefs, seagrass beds, and other marine habitats.
"Under protection" means areas designated to prevent degradation, conserve biodiversity, and maintain ecological health (e.g., marine protected areas, no-fishing zones, and conservation reserves). Protection efforts can include marine conservation programmes, policy implementation, and habitat restoration (non-exhaustive list).
"Under sustainable management" means that the ecosystems are managed using practices that balance conservation with responsible resource use, such as marine spatial planning, sustainable fisheries, and habitat restoration.
Management efforts can include marine conservation programmes, policy implementation, and ecosystem-based management initiatives (non-exhaustive list).
